There was an unforgettable moment at last year’s Oscars.
Ben Stiller broke the usual “come out from behind and talk” routine by rising from underneath the stage. Suddenly, however, the platform stopped moving, leaving only Stiller’s upper torso visible. This moment was funny but revealed something crucial:
When functioning intentionally, multimedia production is invisible.
Naturally, Stiller found the only reason for the audience to think behind the scenes, but in any traditional media, this “invisibility” principle applies.
During concerts, the venue and crew are set up for immersion, not distraction. Imagine if, suddenly, the band gets way too quiet, the lights shut off, or a camera crew member topples you with their heavy rig?
No matter your production role or the environment, you almost never want to be known by the audience.
